Exploring Amelie’s of Atlanta

Weekend updates and reports were given yesterday, and I’m too lazy to go all out for one. SOOOO…here are my thoughts for on one place that I’ve tried twice in one week: Amelie’s

What’s not to love about this French bakery? From their amazingly eclectic decor to their delectable treats, there will always be something new for you to experience on any given visit.  I recommend going out on a limb and trying something that you’re not wholeheartedly sure about.  I haven’t been disappointed yet!

Must tries: Cafe au lait (pronounce, cafe ooh lay) with ANY of their pastries.  None of the pastries are necessarily fresh out the oven (at least on my visits), but their sweet tones really come out nicely with a simple cafe au lait…no sugar added to the coffee, and none needed.

Be adventurous and try their weird sounding soups.  They won’t sound good, but they’ll be the best soups you’ve ever had.  Guaranteed.  Very light and surprisingly refreshing.

If you’re not feeling adventurous, the BLT on a crispy croissant will  not disappoint. It’s also a light fare, so pair with a soup, and finish with a nice almond tea cake and a cafe au lait! #winningcombo

Life is Beautiful

Hello Blogging fam!

I’ve missed you, and I vow to do a better job at being a more involved blogger.

What I want to tell you requires some sort of prologue, so bear with me.

Roger, my handsome, wonderful man, moved to Atlanta just over a year ago in mid-April 2014 in order to be with me so we could start our lives together as one. We didn’t get married until September 2014, but it was always important to me that we live in the same city before getting married.

(Roger’s Texas crew)

Roger, that same handsome, wonderful man, gave up a lot to be with me.  There’s no way to sugar-coat this, or spin it in any other way.  He gave up his job, apartment, and a tight-knit team in Texas to move to the Big Peach (Atlanta). And I’m forever grateful for his sacrifice. But it has been a sacrifice for sure!

Since Roger started working in Atlanta, he’s had a rough go at it.  I won’t go into all the details, but two jobs later, an hour long commute to work, and some less than ideal work teams, we are ready to find a city that is for both of us.  A new start together, instead of trying to fit Roger in to my old life.

(What I looked like when I moved to Atlanta)

I have lived and worked in Atlanta since February 2010.  I left my home in lush Southwest, Florida for a job in the “big” city.  And it’s been a great city for me.  I’ve met a lot of people who have changed my life forever, and have had some wonderful roomies I’m proud to call my best friends.  But it was my city, at best, and even then didn’t necessarily feel like home once Roger moved to town.

With Roger’s jobs (both of them), it was hard for him to take time off to see family. And being a new wife, that meant it was hard to see my family as well…because I wasn’t gonna leave him hanging while I went galavanting around the US with all of OUR money.  Ya feel me?

Also, our beautiful little home (pictured above) is quite the trek from where I work.  And anyone who knows Atlanta traffic, knows the struggle is real!

Family is where our heart is. I’m not sure if this is a recent development as a young married couple, but being near one of our families just means the world to us.

I love my family, but it makes more sense to be near his in Texas.  He’s got a beautiful niece and nephew who are growing up faster than what we can keep up with.  We’ve been missing birthday parties and big events in their lives.  So, we’d like to be closer to them at the end of the day.

We started praying for this back in February…to be nearer to family.  And God came through in a big way.  A God-sized way.

Roger and I were both offered jobs at the same company and city in Texas.  And not only jobs…but a place to live and a car to drive.  I don’t know if I’ve fully explained Roger’s car, but we call it the green booger for a reason.  As you may remember reading, we’ve been saving for a truck. Well guess what? The same exact truck we’ve been saving for (a Toyota Tundra), is the “car” that we will be driving in our new city. What?!?! God got it right down to the truck?!

So needless to say, this is not only an answer to prayer, but allows us to find a city with a slower pace (which I feel I desperately need), gets us closer to Roger’s sis and her family (only 1 hour and 45 minute drive), gets us a more reliable second car (the truck to replace Roger’s car), and give us both jobs so that we feel will use our individual talents.  It’s literally a dream coming true in many ways.

I’m not naive enough to believe that a new city won’t come with it’s own trials and tribulations.  I’m giving up my entire support system, after all.  But I do believe it will allow us to have “our”city, where we both can grow and flourish as a couple and as individuals.  I don’t think this new city has everything I need.  No city does.  For that, I’ve got to rely on God. And that’s a good place to be.  A place where I have to rely more on Him, than what I’m familiar or comfortable with.

If any of you guys are praying folk, please lift Roger and I up in prayer! If everything continues on the path we’ve been planning for, we will be moving in JUNE!!!! That’s next month!!!! WHAT?!? Literally crazy.

Thanks for taking the time to read today! Life is a beautiful, crazy thing full of incredible surprises and I’m glad to be experiencing it with my sweet, sweet man of mine!

My Momma

My mom…is the most amazing mom.  I’m sure many of you feel this way, but naturally you’re wrong. Haha…j/k, but really…my mom is better than your mom! lol

She’s never pressured me to be or do something that wasn’t me.  She wasn’t one of those moms that pressured me to date when I was 24 years-old and had never been kissed.  She wasn’t a mom who pressured me to lose weight.  We encouraged each other, for sure, but she never made me feel bad about myself for any type of weight gain, and trust me, I’m been up and down a lot over the years.  She always believes I can do and succeed at anything, even when I’m skeptical about it, myself.

She is laid back, but fiercely organized.  She could come in any situation and have all problems figured out within minutes, but she’ll only do that if you want her to.  She’s the smartest woman I know, and the best advocate for anyone she considers her kid (natural kid or not).

I love her more than words or this blog post can express, and I’m so blessed that she’s MY mom.

Wedding Wednesday {Crafting, Part 1}

That one time I was crazy and decided to craft for my wedding!

I got married on September 13, 2014.  And I planned a LOT of crafts for Roger and I to make for our wedding day.

If you have a year to plan and prep for your wedding, then you’re golden.  If you have 6 months or less to plan and prep, AND you’re a type-A personality *Lindsey, here…raising my hand* then crafting is a crazy idea! lol

We had a lot of fun crafting but it was a lot of work, and we needed a lot of friends to help out!

In part one (of two) of my Crafting series I’m giving you all the deets on my table decorations:

{Dying Glasses}

That’s right, folks.  Mod Podge and food coloring.  And lots of patience!!!–cuz these suckers take forever to dry. We thrifted for our wedding glasses from various thrift shops.  It took about 7 trips over the course of 6 weeks to get all the glasses we needed. We dyed a total of 112 glasses.

{Dying Doilies}

Do you sense a theme here? Roger is Mexican and I wanted to create something that would be like the flags used in his culture on special occasions:

Processed with VSCOcam with lv03 presetBut I wanted to do an wedding spin on them (without having plain white flags), so I created a colorful pastel palette and we dyed doilies for DAYS.  In this craft, we used water, food coloring, and dollar store pans. It took an army of friends, and an hour of dying here and there to get it all done in a timely manner.

All in all, we died 700 doilies for the occasion. Only a handful of those are pictured below. IMG_6042

{Paper Flowers}

I didn’t get to make these sorts of flowers in elementary school a whole lot, but I did once or twice, I’m sure.  But now, after my wedding prep, I can now assemble such a flower with my eyes closed! With this craft, I took stuff to work to have my friends and coworkers lend a helping hand.  What can I say, we were in crunch mode.

Here was what I was going for…these are the pics I took to give to my decorators so they would know how I wanted the tables set.  See?! Type-A to the max!

IMG_6984 IMG_6985Don’t worry, this was just to give people an idea.  We actually put the doilies on string and used double sided tape to keep them closed.  I may or may not still have ALL of these banners.  It took a lot of work, yo! Hard to part with them!!!

Well guys, that it for today’s edition of Wedding Wednesday! More crafts (a few more) next week.

Wedding Wednesday {Choosing my Colors}

Why choose just a couple of colors when you can have them all?! lol.

For my wedding, I did something a little non-traditional. I chose an inspiration piece, and went from there:

Even though my wedding was in September, I wasn’t going to have sunflowers and fall colors at my wedding.  I wanted a light, Colorful wedding. And that’s what I went for.

But this was about the third decision I made to with regard to my wedding.  At first, I wanted a Hollywood Glam theme. Something along the lines of this (but obvs less extravagant):

But then I thought that was too “theme-like”.  And it didn’t feel enough like me.

My next attempt at a wedding theme/color scheme was to do an English Tea Party with a vintage twist.  Think a Downton Abbey themed Garden Party:

I wanted to married outside with very pale pinks for the bridesmaids dresses.  But then I changed my mind to be married outside, and my sister informed me that she would look naked in a pale pink dress.  Which is tragic, but true, lol. I ended up changing my mind again (not because of my sis, but because of my venue) and went with the inspiration piece you’ve already seen.

The chapel we decided to be married in was the chapel where I first gave my life to Christ.

The chapel is largely unchanged since my childhood, and has very red carpet and pew covering.  I just felt pale pink bridesmaid dresses wouldn’t work. And I wanted to incorporate more colors, including my favorite color.  Which doesn’t happen to be pink, but blue!

Here was the idea I wanted for the bridesmaid dresses:

bridalpartylookI of course am the one in white. My sis would be in blue, my cousin in the seafoam, and my sister-in-law in the salmon like color.

With only 3 bridesmaids, no one needed to match.

Well, I suggested a certain type of dress that was way out of everyone’s budget, so I went the traditional David’s bridal route.  I told them they could get whatever dress they wanted as long as it was knee-length chiffon. And then I gave them each their color:

Here’s what they chose:

Pretty spot on, so I was happy! These dresses definitely fit well with the inspiration piece!

What colors did you choose? And if you’re not married…what colors have you always dreamed about?

Thursday Thoughts {Greece}

Linking up with Meagan from Beautiful Things for today’s post:

Beautiful Things

I think…

Roger and I are going to Greece in September and I couldn’t be happier.  We leave Sept 28th for a 10 day excursion. We booked it Sunday and we’ve already paid our downpayment!

You can’t go to Greece without an up-to-date passport! But never fear, Roger and I got ours in the mail last night.  New last name and all!

This weekend I’ll be hanging out with teens from our Church at a youth retreat.  I’m really looking forward to building better relationships with them this weekend!

My 10 year high school reunion is this June.  How did that happen? #soold

If I won a million dollars, it’d probably take me the rest of my life to figure out what to do with it all!

The week after vacation should be mandatory half days. #thestruggle

I wish exercising was more fun than watching TV, but alas.

My best friend from high school had her first child last month and I can’t wait to meet her in May!

I’ve decided to stop being a hater and start being an appreciator. Don’t make no sense to hold grudges against people.  It doesn’t effect them at all, but makes you a bitter person.

I’ve decided that being an adult means you’re always sleep deprived.  Other adults call that state of being: responsibility. #ugh

I love water. Just water.  I drink it all day.  No need for adding flavors to it.

And that’s it for my randomness today! Hope you have a great Friday tomorrow and a wonderful weekend! Happy Thursday!

Family {What Dreams and Vacations are Made of}

I’m utterly devastated to be back at work this week after our lovely time in Texas.  I had an amazing time with family, and it’s so hard to be back.  All I can think of is how fast my niece and nephew are going to grow between now and when I get to see them again.  I love them both so much!!! It’s like I left a part of me in Texas!And also, my obsession with my godson/nephew may or may not be very apparent in the pics I took! lol.

I loooooved seeing Roger around his family–to see how much they love him.

But all good things must come to an end.  Because as much fun as I had in Texas, it did a number on my digestive system.  Let’s just say I’ve got a lot of stomach shrinking to do after this week of eating whatever I wanted! Three breakfast tacos every morning, y’all! I was **in heaven.** Fo real.

So anyway, here’s what happened:

We landed in San Antonio, and after an hour or so at his parents’ home, we hit the road to see Roger’s grandpa in a small town near Houston.  It was about a two hour drive from San Antonio.  Roger’s sister, Amanda, and her children were in San Antonio this week too so they could spend some time with us. They were on all of these adventures with us!

Trip to da zoo!!! It was our nephew, Caden’s, first time! And he walked THE WHOLE TIME! Not bad for 18 months!

We spent time at San Antonio’s kiddie park, a place Roger’s parents took Roger and his sister when they were little.  Now they’re taking their grandkids. Time flies! After the kiddie park, we hit the road for Corpus Christi, where Roger and I had our Texas Wedding Reception on Thursday…aka, a party to meet his family.  We had the best time!

Our last moments with the fam.  We hit up Market Square in downtown San Antonio for some souvenirs, and cute photo ops.  Then dinner where I ate WAY too much.  THEN…we headed home to play this awesome Mexican card game called Loteria (pretty much bingo).  Amanda’s husband had joined us in San Antonio for our last night there, and we all had a blast with that game!

Aka, back to reality.  Sadness.  We made it to the airport in the knick of time, but before rushing to security, we got to say one last goodbye to my Caden and Lea.  Love those two! Missing all my family so much!

Wedding Wednesday {Engagement Photos, Round 2}

Well, hello lovelies!

I actually scheduled this in advance, which is a step in a new direction for me.  I told you I was gonna post the paint pics today, and I didn’t want to disappoint! But I’m also on vacation, and in an effort to be #fullypresent, decided to schedule in advance.  Go me! lol

Without further ado:

Whew.  Took me a bit to get all those photos together! But I hope you enjoyed all of them.  And sorry to actually include ALL of them (well, just about, lol).

Tips if you’re looking to do a paint photo session:

1) Non-toxic finger paint still somehow burns as it dries.  Be aware! lol.

2) You can find a lot of paint supplies at the Dollar General.

3) For colors, remember your color theory and what mixes with what since finger paint comes in limited colors.  We did a LOT of paint mixing before the shoot.

4) It’s uncomfortable being covered in paint, but just remember the pics will make your momentary discomfort worth it.

5) Washable paint does…WASH off! lol. BUT that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take precautions where possible.  We put down drop cloths and that helped a lot! We also wore clothes we planned to throw away…old shoes, and pants that didn’t really fit anymore, etc.  We could  have washed them, I suppose, but it would have been a lot of trouble.

That’s all I can think of, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask away.  We took these almost a year ago, so some tips escape me!

The Weekend Report {Happy Easter! And Beltline Adventures}

I’ve had a good/productive weekend, with a day off Friday, and technically a day off today.  I’m finding as a grown up, days off don’t necessarily translate into sleeping in, but hey, being productive makes me happy, so it’s all good!

Friday started with going into work with my hubby, who did NOT have the day off.  Then to McD’s to get some breakfast for us.  I had an egg white delight because I’m counting calories once again, and actually, I’m not hating life. So there’s that.

Then to Ross to find a dress for the Texas wedding reception this Thursday.  Pics on that next week for sure!

THEN…a mani/pedi so that I can be vacation ready! I went with the neutral gray.  I don’t know if I love it, but I certainly don’t hate it!

IMG_8900After my mani/pedi, I headed back to Roger’s work with Chick Fila in hand, and stayed there as we participated in our Church’s Good Friday Service.  I had to wear real shoes for that, instead of flip flops, and messed up my toenail with it’s fresh coat of paint #shouldhaveknownbetter. But it’s all good, because somehow I have the best husband in the world, and he fixed if for me! Haha

After the church service, Roger and I had an appointment with H&R block to finish up our taxes before the April 15th deadline.  Then to Walgreen’s to have our passport photos made, THEN UPS to have our passport applications mailed off.  We are GOING to Greece, y’all!!!

THEN….as if all of that wasn’t productive enough, and perhaps because it was TOO productive, Roger and I went to Historic Fourth Ward Park for a walk on the Beltline, stoping at a restaurant in Krogg’s Street market that I just HAD to introduce Roger to: Fred’s Meat & Bread.

Views from our walk to dinner:

Saturday was a good day…much more laid back, with chores sprinkled in here and there. I finished up some designs so that I don’t have to take my computer with me on vacation #fullypresent.  And I did laundry and cleaned the house–with Roger’s helps, of course.

Saturday evening, I went to a local park to have professional portraits taken.  No particular reason. Just wanted some nice photos that didn’t revolve around my engagement photos or wedding photos.  The same girl who did our engagement and wedding photos took my portraits…FOR FREE! So that was a blessing!

Here’s an after pic of me:

After pics, Roger and I headed to a new restaurant to try to explore our city a little more.  Something I always try to do more of, but was super encouraged after reading my friend Sarah’s posts on how she is exploring her own city!

Roger and I hit up a pizza parlor near our home, and had the BEST PIZZA EVER!!! Well, it was definitely up there! Oz Pizza…they make good stuff, yo!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Then of course, it was EASTER!!!!! YAY! Christ is Risen!

I headed to church with Roger when he went at 7:30 in the am.  And ya know, waking up at 6am didn’t kill me…maybe I should do it more often…use that time to workout…who knows?!

Roger did an amazing job leading worship!

After church we headed to a restaurant for Sunday lunch because homegirl was not cooking lunch to have leftovers when she’ll be out of town for the 7 days following! lol. Then home to rest, finish up some housework, and host some folks for a game night.

This morning?! Headed to the airport for vacay! Can’t wait!  A post to follow next Monday with that update!

Happy Easter y’all!!!!

Beautiful Things

I think vacation can’t come soon enough! Leaving this Monday for *almost* a week in San Antonio…well at least, that’s where we’re flying into.  Our family is throwing us a Texas Wedding Reception so I can meet Roger’s whole family.  They were unable to come to the wedding in South Carolina! It’s gonna be an adventure, and I can’t wait! Hitting at least 3 cities!

Screen Shot 2015-04-01 at 11.57.43 AM

I just learned this week that Taylor doesn’t sing about her Starbucks lovers in Blank Space.  Oops.

I think it’s a miracle that I’ve kept this plant alive since June 2013.  #AudreyIIstatus

I think….that I definitely cherish even brief moments with Roger way more on busy weeks like this one!

I think…Kathleen is one of my favs, and I enjoyed hanging out with her on Sunday and catching the new Insurgent movie! Loved it, though she did not! And I was happy to help her out by getting her pics for her Monday post about “The Goodwill“!
